Fuseini Issah, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikwei North, has urged Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare to bring his personnel under control while dealing with riotous situations.

According to him, "If the police take action and do not do it effectively, it may result in death...people die when the police fail. As a result, the police must not fail "As a result, they are advised to act properly while dealing with an excited mob.

His remark came in response to a recent incident between students from the Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi and the police, in which the police used tear gas to disperse enraged students protesting regular pedestrian knockdowns by automobiles.

Following the event, which resulted in the hospitalization of around 25 students and a number of police officers, the IGP paid a visit to the victims to examine their status.

According to a statement from the Ghana Police Service, certain personnel have been sanctioned.

DCOP Kwasi Akomeah-Apraku, the acting Ashanti Regional Police Commander, and two others have been arrested in connection with the tumultuous events that marked Monday's protest by students from the Islamic Senior High School.

ACP George Ankomah, the Regional Operations Officer, and ACP Alex Cudjoe Acquah, the Suame Divisional Police Commander, are the other policemen arrested.

According to the police, their detention is necessary to allow for a full investigation into the occurrence.

On Wednesday morning's "Kokrokoo" program on Peace FM,  Hon. Fuseini Issah recommended the police to improve their methods of safeguarding lives and avoid aggravating situations that may turn tragic.

"We hope that the Police not only investigate, but also prepare so that if a riot of this nature occurs elsewhere in Ghana, they are equipped with the right equipment to safeguard lives, since the Police is similar to a medical doctor. When he fails, people die, and you can't replace those who die."
